O-Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, created the art of Aikido as both a means of self-defense and a path to spiritual enlightenment. This art utilizes an attacker’s momentum and the principles of internal energy to combat the aggressor with only minimal effort (maximizing efficiency). Through maneuvers such as “tai sabaki” and “tenkan” (body pivots) combined with “kansetsuwaza” (joint locks and arm bars) and “nage-waza” (body throws) a fighting scenerio can easily be resolved.
These techniques have their roots in Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, which works on the principle of “aiki” (soft drawing techniques) rather than the harsher methods of some other martial arts. The most evident distinction of this style versus other systems of Aikido is the addition of strikes before the techniques are put into motion. This is one factor that makes the art more practical.
