Iaijutsu/Kenjutsu: The study of the sword can be broken into two parts, the first being Iaijutsu. Iaijutsu is the “Quick draw live blade sword art,” and focuses on using the sword from the sheathed position. Not only does Fukasa-ryu Iaijutsu have a comprehensive set of katas which help perfect one’s drawing technique, it also has a number of techniques for practical defense in combat. These were actual techniques used on the battle field.
Once the sword is drawn, the art of Kenjutsu is employed with various blocks, strikes, and disarms in its arsenal. Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu are the two sword arts that the Samurai used during war time, making them combat effective. Iaido and Kendo, however, were created later on in peaceful times, focusing on more spiritual endeavors. The ancient arts of Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu are both beautiful and effective.
