Aikido and Newaza

Newaza are grappling techniques including ground grappling techniques.  What is your feeling on the two together?

Before I answer, I have practiced Gracie Jiujitsu and Aikido for over 20 years.

I love both.

O’sensei was never taken to the ground. He would say that if you gotten taken to the ground, your Aikido was bad!

True, however the reality of it is that no matter how good a person is, he or she is only human and may make a mistake. If you never train for the worst-case possibilities including getting taken to the floor, you may be left unprepared. It is always better to train regularly in several different areas, even if it is the context of one art, than to say I am not going to practice newaza or any other skill set because that is never going to happen. If that is the case, why practice suwariwaza?
